Physiotherapy is the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of physical injuries and movement problems. Click here to go to the Physiotherapy Services page.
Chiropractic care is an alternative health care practice that treats bodily disorders by manipulation of the spine and other joints. It is based on the belief that disease is the result of interference with nerve function and that adjusting the segments of the spinal column will restore a normal condition.
Massage Therapy is the mobilization of the soft tissues of the body by applying fixed or moveable pressure to the muscles and connective tissues.
Physiotherapy involves treatment of the spinal column, joints, connective tissue and everything in between! Physiotherapists study the physiology and interaction of all of the body systems including the brain, heart, lungs, nervous tissue, circulatory pathways, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and more. The main method of assessment and treatment in Chiropractic care is manipulation (or “adjustment”) of the spinal column and in Massage Therapy, moving the soft tissues of the body. A physiotherapist will assess all of the physiology related to your condition and develop a custom treatment plan for you which may include mobilization or manipulation of the spine, peripheral joints, and soft tissues as well as other methods to reduce pain and inflammation and promote healing, including custom exercise programs involving stretching, strengthening and stabilizing the body structures to promote health to the body as a whole.
Physiotherapy is a very active process – you will do more than lie on a table! You must be ready to learn about your body and how your posture and daily activities affect your health as well as be ready to take an active role in healing yourself and preventing further injury. You will be given an exercise program to work on at home between your in-clinic sessions. If you are looking for a treatment that will provide you with lasting positive changes and are ready to take an active role in making those changes happen, physiotherapy is for you!
You will need to fill out some general information forms and if you are a WCB or MPI patient, there will be some questionnaires to complete as well so please arrive 10 minutes early for your first appointment. If you would like to complete your general information forms prior to arrival, you may download the insurance form here and the patient information form here. Your physiotherapist will take a detailed history of how your pain began or injury occurred followed by a physical assessment to determine your diagnosis. We will need to see the affected area, so bringing a tank top, t-shirt or shorts to your session is helpful. It is sometimes necessary to provoke your symptoms to determine their cause, and this can occasionally aggravate your condition temporarily. We will help to relieve any discomfort you experience after the assessment. As time allows, your first treatment will begin the same day. You should plan for approximately an hour.
Subsequent treatments will likely be required – your physiotherapist will tell you how often they recommend you return. It is common to need 1-3 treatments a week to start. As you progress, you will need to see your therapist less frequently. Your therapy sessions will conclude when your goals are met and maintainable at home with a home program. It is common for people to attend physiotherapy treatments for 1-3 months, though it varies from person to person. Plan for 45 minutes to an hour for each treatment.
You will receive a home program to work on which can include stretches, strengthening, and/or stability exercises. You may be asked to make adjustments to your work station or changes to your daily activities or exercise regime in order to relieve pain and promote healing.

Physiotherapy is only covered by Manitoba Medical when performed in a hospital setting. When Pallister's Conservative government took office in Manitoba in 2017, the funding for most outpatient physiotherapy services were cut from hospitals. There are now only a select few conditions that are covered by Manitoba Medical when you qualify for outpatient physiotherapy, and this only takes place at Health Sciences Centre. You would need to have your doctor fill out a referral and send it to the central wait list for screening and approval. (Click here for the Outpatient Physiotherapy Referral Form) Unfortunately, even if you qualify there is often a several month or longer wait time to receive these services. If you choose this route, you may want to consider an assessment and beginning a home program with a physiotherapist in the community in order to start the healing process.
