Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a hands-on technique that provides a specialized assessment and treatment of the musculoskeletal system. Physiotherapists use manual therapy to effectively address a range of acute and chronic conditions. Manual therapy is used to restore joint mobility, ease muscle tension and tightness and to improve overall function.

Different manual therapy techniques include joint and soft tissue mobilizations as well as joint manipulations which help to restore proper biomechanics of the peripheral or spinal joints. The type of technique is indicated by the stage of recovery, the degree of restriction and is also dependent on the needs and goals of the patient.

Depending on the patient’s stage of healing and recovery, manual therapy techniques are customized to either reduce pain caused by muscle spasm, tension, or to restore joint restrictions to improve dysfunction.

Studies have shown that manual therapy, in addition to exercise, is a more effective treatment plan than exercise alone. Research shows that by combining manual therapy and exercise, there is a decrease in pain and an improvement in strength and function.

Physiotherapists with advanced manual therapy skills will provide a plan to treat your injury, to help you get better and recover faster, but also to stay healthier by educating you about your condition to lessen the chance of reoccurrence.
